Pula - poop amphitheatres and poop rain

We’ve decided that we like Croatia so much that we are spending an extra day here. Still did pretty much the same thing though! Got up, burnt a bit, splashed around a bit, fell over trying to walk over the pebbles, the norm! We ventured into the unknown and crossed the wall to the swimming area on the mainland and found a massive concrete thing to jump off - yay! Marcus managed a full blown back flop - ouch! And ant did a brilliant running man off the top that I’m sure Dane would’ve been proud of.

The boys played MORE ping pong then we went to see the Roman Amphitheatre in the centre of Pula's old town. It’s built entirely from local limestone and was designed to host gladiatorial contests. The 30 metre high wall is almost intact and contains 2 rows of 72 arches. It was very pretty and all, but a bit poop to be honest! Had fun pretending to be a savage lion viciously attacking gladiator ant's leg though!

We were just tucking into our 10th? 11th? 12th? Ice cream of the trip when huge bolts of lightning started crashing out of nowhere! It had been sunny all day and the sky still seemed to be clear but the storm was amazing. The whole sky was lighting up and reflecting in the sea. Suddenly remembered that we'd left everything outside back at the tent so raced all the other happy campers back and chucked everything in Axl, our faithful steed, and settled din for a night of candle lit drinking. Ant and Marcus took shelter under Axl’s tailgate with their very manly umbrellas (very safe in a lightning storm) whilst me and cat wrapped up in snugly sleeping bags - too right!

Pula - oh i do like to be beside the seaside...

We sat up on the rocks ‘til late last night as the sea crashed about having the inevitable deep conversations about space and stuff that always seem to creep up when you're somewhere amazing and a bit tipsy! It was so beautiful; I swear the moon was the biggest I’ve ever seen it and it reflected perfectly on the waves, which were the only sound after midnight.

Headed straight down to the grassy beach again and considered sailing to Italy in the dingy but got hungry so had noodles for brekkie instead.

Splashed around for a bit then attempted to burn some more before walking around the coast to some rocks on the south coast where you could jump off into the sea. The water must have been so deep here, you couldn’t see the bottom even though the water was crystal clear.

Me and cat slept on the big flat rocks and watched the sun begin to set while the hunters went out and provided food which we later cooked into the most delicious curry. Played some pool and sat around our candles under the stars for a bit. I love Croatia!

Hope everyone is ok, love you lots xxx

    Pula - bedrock at sunset

Woke up this morning at 5.30 because we have massive rips in our tent and the sun was rising! Decided Croatia is b-e-a-utiful!!  Went for a quick walk around the coast (of the campsite!) and saw people fishing from the rocks and old people swimming in the sea - who goes for a swim at 6 in the morning?

Our campsite covers the whole of a half island. It’s got a coast all the way around apart from a 5m piece of land that joins to the mainland. So the campsite has loadsa beaches. We went to the beach on the east side of the island where there is a big patch of grass perfect for snoozing on! We bought a rubber dingy and splashed about in the sea for a bit. The water is so clear it’s unbelievable, almost as clear as Thailand. But the beach is pebbly so it’s pretty funny watching everyone trying to look cool as they hobble into the sea. Something swam past me and hit my butt so i quickly ran away and hid on the grass for the rest of the afternoon!

We decided that it was about time we had a BBQ and found the most amazing place to have it. Down on the coast of the west side of the island there are huge flat rocks. The sea has formed loadsa different layers and washed out little coves, so we settled in one that looked like it had been designed perfectly to be a kitchen! There was a low ridge that made a perfect bench with a higher one next to it making a bar area, then a medium one that was really big and flat - perfect to balance a BBQ on! Fred Flintstone would have been proud! And it was the best BBQ too, we had everything! Burgers, sausages, kebabs, veggies, corn on the cobs, fried veggies, the whole lot! And as we sat to enjoy our masterpiece we watched the sun set into the sea, I could have cried!!!!

    Croatia - coast to coast!

Another fantastic drive day - well done team!! Did some last minute Budapestian shopping so didn’t actually set off until 12 - pretty late for an estimated 7 hour journey! Oops! After only an hour on the road we stopped for go-carting, as if the boys didn’t have enough driving to do! It was pretty funny though, Marcus won, but Ant had the fastest lap, so they were both happy! And it somehow broke the journey up and made the day seem more than just a drive day.

The border crossing into Croatia was pretty scary. They searched EVERYWHERE!! The seats were pulled up in the car and our bags had to be emptied and searched too. It took over half an hour and we felt like right criminals as all the Croatians drove straight through the control staring at the dodgy English people! I think we were the first English drivers they'd seen in a long time!

The drives are becoming such a laugh now and the scenery is so beautiful. The mountains go on and on into the distance, all really lush and each one slightly hazier than the last one. Also as we arrived in Pula, at the sea, the sun was setting and cast amazing colours over the sea and mountains. Took way too many photos!

Managed to find a campsite, pitch our tent and cook dinner all in the dark before we hit the bar to celebrate making it from the north coast of Europe to the south coast without breaking down or killing each other!
